Fish Stocking Information

Starting in 2007, stocked fish were injected in the lower jaw with a harmless dye to identify the year and location pertaining to where the fish was released.  The dye injection was done by Garrett Drach, Fisheries Technician, along with other members of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.  Garrett had provided us with the following information regarding the dye injections.

2007 - Fish stocked in the Rib River were injected with a pink dye.   284 true musky stocked in the Stevens Point Flowage were injected with an orange dye. To determine if any fish from the Point Flowage were making their way down river past the Point Dam to the Whiting or Biron sections (upstream from the Biron dam) the fish released from the Hwy HH landing (formerly Hwy 10) had the dye injected in the lower right jaw.  The 50 fish released from the Consolidated Parkway landing were injected in the lower left jaw. No fish were stocked this year directly into the Biron section.

2008 - The 275 fish released in both the Point Flowage and the downstream section of the Wisconsin river had a green dye jnjected.  The same scheme applied again, lower right jaw for the 140 Point Flowage fish and lower left for fish released downstream from Point.  Of the remaining 135 fish, 40 were released from Consolidated Parkway landing and 95 were released from the Blue Heron Landing.

2009 -  Due to some terrific fund raising efforts and an overabundance of fish at the fish hatchery, we were able to release 700 fish into the Point Flowage and 600 into Biron section from Galecke Park.  The color for 2009 fish is blue.

2010 - Dye color and number of fish is unknown at this time, but when it is available Don will put it in the newsletter.

I thought it would be interesting if everyone knew the details about the recent dye injection process should one of these fish wind up your boat. It would help the answer the question about whether or not these fish make it downstream and how far. Radio tagged sturgeon have certainly done it.   The other side of the coin is if the fish is under 30 inches without the dye marking, it is from natural reproduction.  Based on information from the WDNR website on musky growth rates; Sexual maturity depends upon size and age. Stunted fish tend to mature when they are younger and smaller. The majority of females mature when they are 32-33 inches and 6 or 7 years old, although some females mature when only 25 inches long. Likewise, most males mature when they are 28-29 inches long and 5 or 6 years old, while stunted males mature when they are 21 or 22 inches long. The larger the female, the more eggs she will produce. A very large fish may produce over 400,000 eggs.
